“Heart It Races” — Dr. Dog

Dr. Dog’s cover of Architecture In Helsinki’s “Heart it Races” is a contender for the title of “Better Than the Original,” which is a rare title to bestow. I may be escorted to the street and stoned for thinking so, but the way Dr. Dog transforms the quirky and playful, calypso-filled original track into a relaxed, indie-summer love-making song is brilliant.

Architecture In Helsinki hails from Australia — you can hear the accent in the song if you listen closely. However, Dr. Dog is a band that formed in West Philadelphia (…”Born and raised/On the playground where I spent most of my days” — sorry, couldn’t help it) with members stemming from their prior indie band, Raccoon.

If we were to compare the tracks, Dr. Dog’s version is equivalent to driving in an old school convertible along the California coastline during a warm evening with some of your closest friends. On the other hand, Architecture In Helsinki’s original is reminiscent of dancing and sipping a piña colada at a tropical-themed party. Whether you prefer to wear Hawaiian button-downs or cardigans with jeans that are too small for you, you’ll fall in love with this song.
