Ask Amanda: Summer Style

Once upon a time, way back in 2009, Diablo Cody wrote a column about how much she dislikes summer (read it here), and it was like looking into a mirror. Of my brain. Thinking about summer. Let’s just say we agree on a lot of things about this dreaded season. She hates white clothing because she knows “white clothing is supposed to enhance that summer glow, but writers don’t tan.”

Amen, Diablo. A-MEN!

She also doesn’t like the beach, and spends most of her summers obsessively plowing through stacks of books or sitting in air-conditioned rooms writing. Hi, twin.

But you can’t always be inside. In cold months, I wear a lot of clothes. Then summer hits and I am shedding layers like a spastic snake because, honestly, I think I’m cold-blooded and my body cannot regulate its temperature worth a darn. A tights, skirt, oxford, tie, blazer ensemble is suddenly completely inappropriate and suffocating, and I’m looking around for inspiration for my summer wardrobe.

And where do I find it? Music festivals and rodeos.

Summer definitely brings out my inner hippie, and also my (somewhat more secret) inner cowgirl. There is just nothing like a pair of tiny shorts and boots. And summer means I can let my nearly waist-length hair dry naturally in the heat. Makeup is kind of optional since in extreme heat it kind of just melts off anyway. Flowing skirts, tank tops, bright pedicures in strappy sandals. Ah, summer.

So you’ve been hearing me rant about suits and grown-up clothes for men, but what are they supposed to wear in the summer? I have no idea. Maxi dresses?

We’re in this together, SOUND Style readers. Welcome to my “what are boys supposed to wear when its hot outside” journey. Comment below with your thoughts. ♦ ♦ ♦
